THE BOOK OF DANIEL
Introduction:
The book of Daniel is one of prophetic vision. Its speaks of Daniel's time in Babylon, how God used Daniel for His purpose and It parallels events told in the book of Revelation involving things that are yet to take place and about the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ and the final judgment. It setting is in the time of captivity of Jews in Babylon.
Chapter 1:
Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon overthrew Jehoiakim, King of Judah in the third year of His reign in 605 B.C.. God gave Jehoiakim to Nebuchadnezzar because He had judged the people of Judah for their sins of idolatry. Judah was the last remnant of the people of Israel. For their continuous rebellion against Him, God turned them over to Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled from 605 to 562 B.C.
The book of Daniel shows God's sovereignty and how He can bring about His righteousness, even through pagan rulers. This was accomplished as Daniel ruled with Nebuchadnezzar until his defeat by King Cyrus who then allowed the Jewish people to return from captivity and take back with them vessels of the temple which Nebuchadnezzar had seized during his reign.
Nebuchadnezzar took prisoners from Israel including Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar instructed Ashpenaz, the master of eunuchs (Eunuchs were often regarded as privileged men who's advise was sought by the King) to bring some of the young men of Israel to him. The selected were the choice pick of the people. Ones which were well groomed, gifted in many ways and able to learn the language and literature of the Chaldeans. (The term of Chaldean referred to the Literary writings of the Babylonians, astrologers, diviners and other types of wisdom practicing to which Daniel was being introduced. Daniel and his friends had to learn this type of writings in order for them to be well educated with this literary language).
Among the young men of Israel taken, along with Daniel for these things were, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. All of them were given new names from the Eunuchs, which were; For Daniel was given Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach, to Mishael, Meshach, and to Azariah, Abed-Nego . The new names were; Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-Nego.
Daniel and his friends were given all kinds of delicacies to eat and drink. Some of the food was not prepared according to Mosaic customs and was food that was forbidden to eat because it was food offered to Idols as was customary to Babylonians. (Eating food offered to Idols would be to recognize the Idols as deities). So Daniel and his friends refused to eat this food and asked the Eunuchs for vegetables to eat instead which they were given.
Daniel and his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah served before King Nebuchadnezzar, and were found to have greater wisdom and knowledge than all of the magicians and astrologers of his kingdom, because God gave these gifts to them. Daniel especially had the ability to interpret dreams. Daniel continued in this capacity serving Nebuchadnezzar until the first year of King Cyrus.
Chapter 2:
In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream so powerful it affected his sleep. The King gave commands to all his magicians, astrologers and Sorcerers to come to him and give him the interpretation to his dream. When the King commanded they tell him what his dream was and what it meant, The Chaldeans responded;
"Let the king tell his servants and we will show the interpretations of it" Dan. 2:7
The king responded furiously and told them;
"The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known to me the dream, with the interpretation therefore, ye shall be cut in pieces and
your houses made a dunghill." Dan. 2:5
The Chaldeans told the king there was no one on earth that could do such a thing. This made the king declare that all the wise men be killed including Daniel.
Daniel asked the king to give him time and he would give him the interpretation of the dream. The king agreed and Daniel returned home to Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. Although Daniel had God given talents for this, it still required Daniel and his friends to pray for wisdom and guidance. After prayer, then the dream was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Here the scriptures give the several verses of praise Daniel gives to God for revealing the dream to him;
"Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are His: And He changeth the times and the seasons: He
removeth kings and setteth up kings: He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: He revealeth
the deep and secret things: He knoweth what is in the darkness and the light dwelleth with him." Dan. 2:20-22
